SCOTT TUNNIX – The Voiceover Revolution!

Navigating the World of Voice Acting: An Insightful Conversation with Award-Winning Artist Scott Tunnix

In the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of voice acting, understanding the industry’s intricacies can often seem as challenging as mastering a new language. Yet, it’s through conversations like the recent interview with Scott Tunnix on “Voice Acting Unplugged” that we gain invaluable insights into this unique field. Scott Tunnix, the recipient of the Male Voiceover Artist of the Year award at the 2024 One Voice Awards, shares an intimate view of his journey into the world of voice acting, highlighting both challenges and triumphs.

A Journey from Corporate to Creative

Scott’s story is a testament to the serendipitous nature of discovery. Originally working in local government, he stumbled upon voice acting by chance. During his pursuit of a new business venture, Scott recorded a greeting for a company with what was then a basic USB microphone. The experience not only earned him his first paycheck as a voice actor but also ignited a passion that eventually led him to leave his corporate job in 2020 and pursue voiceover full-time.

    Navigating the Early Days

Scott shares his early tactics for finding work, noting that platforms like freelancer.com, voices.com, and Voice123 were critical in gaining exposure and experience. Despite some platforms requiring significant membership fees, the investment proved worthwhile as it led to a wealth of opportunities and practical experience.

The Role of Freelance Platforms and Self-Marketing

Discussion on the controversial but influential platform Fiverr highlights the shifting perceptions within the industry. As Scott points out, while there may be stigma associated with such platforms, they represent an accessible entry point for budding voice actors, allowing them to develop their skills and portfolios.

    The Indispensable Industry Connections

Scott emphasizes the importance of networking, not only through online platforms but also through agencies such as Voice Fox, which have been pivotal in securing substantial projects, especially in gaming. Tunnix’s impressive portfolio includes voice work for over 250 video games, illustrating the vast range of opportunities within the gaming sector alone.

    Production Ventures and Expanding Horizons

Beyond personal voice acting gigs, Scott has ventured into production with his company, Unreal Audio. Specializing in casting and production for video games, this venture highlights the diverse avenues open to voice actors willing to explore different aspects of audio production.

    AI: Friend or Foe?

A significant portion of the discussion centers on the intersection of technology and voice acting, particularly AI’s potential impact. While AI poses certain threats to entry-level positions in the industry, Scott remains optimistic about the distinct advantage of human nuance and creativity in voiceover work, anticipating that AI may complement rather than replace human actors.

    Building Confidence and Industry Recognition

Winning the Male Voiceover Artist of the Year award was a landmark moment in Scott’s career, boosting his confidence and reaffirming his talent amidst a backdrop of shared industry insecurities like imposter syndrome. For Scott, the accolade not only served as personal validation but also as a professional boon, enhancing his credibility and reach within the industry.

    Conclusion: Embracing the Craft

At its core, Scott’s journey underscores a profound love for the art of voice acting. From the playful depths of indie video games to the grand narratives of epic animations, his passion fuels a career that feels both meaningful and rewarding. As Scott continues to explore and excel in his craft, his story serves as both an inspiration and a guidepost for aspiring voice actors navigating their own paths in this captivating industry.

SEBASTIEN CROTEAU – Monster Voices Unleashed!

Unleashing the Beast: An Inside Look at Vocal Stunt Performance with Sébastien Croteau

In the intriguing world of voice acting, there exists a niche so unique and specialized that it demands both talent and tenacity: vocal stunt performance. This is the realm where Sébastien Croteau shines. Known as a heavy metal singer and a Tibetan throat singer, Sébastien is also the mastermind behind the Monster Factory. This company specializes in sound creation, voice acting, localization, voice direction, and sound design, tailored specifically for virtual monsters and creatures.

Journey Into the World of Vocal Stunt Performance

Sébastien’s journey began with his involvement in heavy metal and Tibetan throat singing. These experiences cultivated a unique vocal prowess, which led him to be a recognized voice actor and monster sound creator for major video game studios like Ubisoft. During a recent interview on the Voice Acting Unplugged podcast, Sébastien shared insights from his fascinating career, from his first studio session to becoming a sought-after talent for monster and creature vocalization in games like Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed.

From Heavy Metal to Monster Factory

Sébastien’s transition from heavy metal to professional voice acting was what he describes as a “wonderful accident.” His unique abilities caught the attention of Ubisoft, which needed distinctive voice talent for creating creature and monster sounds. This demand set the stage for him to build a career that spans over 400 projects in the gaming industry, and eventually establish the Monster Factory in 2021. This business venture formalized his role as a leader in the niche field of vocal stunt performance, providing opportunities for other vocalists to showcase their talents in video games.

The Art and Science of Creature Vocalization

Underpinning Sébastien’s success is his dedication to perfecting the craft of creature vocalization. He described the complex process of Tibetan and Inuit throat singing, which allows him to produce harmonic frequencies that help create unsettling and otherworldly monster sounds. Despite the high demand for synthetic sound libraries and AI-generated effects, Sébastien emphasizes the unparalleled quality and versatility that human performers bring to these roles.

    The Training Behind the Talent

Aspiring vocal stunt performers need rigorous training to succeed in this field. Sébastien’s workshops focus on teaching individuals how to activate and sustain the unique vocal effects needed for lengthy recording sessions. The Monster Factory offers comprehensive training programs, equipping students with the skills needed to endure the vocal strain of performing as mythical and monstrous creatures.

    Looking Toward the Future

As technology continues to evolve and AI becomes more prevalent, Sébastien encourages a balanced perspective. While the market for creature sounds is dominated by non-human solutions, Sébastien believes there will always be a place for skilled human performers. The Monster Factory continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, offering workshops around the world, and cultivating a community of talented voice actors who share a passion for the bizarre and surreal world of monster sounds.

    The Journey into Voice Acting

Izabela Russell proudly shares that Music Radio Creative has been in operation for nearly 20 years. The company, initially spearheaded by her husband Mike Russell, began as a way to sell his own voice. Expansion and Industry Shifts

Music Radio Creative has widened its scope beyond just radio, embracing opportunities in the podcasting sector and broader markets, including DJs and influencers. Despite shifts in the voiceover industry, Izabela emphasizes, “For us, it was a gradual change rather than an overnight shift.”

The Role of AI in Voice Acting

Izabela offers a candid perspective on AI’s impact, noting that while it has been a reality check for some in the lower tiers of the industry, exceptional voices remain in demand. She encourages artists to “grow with AI rather than see it as a threat.” Music Radio Creative itself has adapted by introducing AI voices, ensuring they remain competitive in a changing landscape.

A Typical Day at Music Radio Creative

Izabela likens herself to Miss Rabbit from Peppa Pig, as she juggles multiple responsibilities from hiring to marketing strategy. Her role involves liaising with both individual creators and large corporations, ensuring a diversified approach to business management.

    Key Attributes for Voice Artists

In a candid moment, Izabela advises aspiring voice actors, “Make sure you can offer something so unique that AI can’t do this.” She stresses the importance of having dedicated demos for different niches and warns against assuming versatility across styles without proof.

    The Global Perspective

Working with clients around the world, Izabela highlights the diversity she encounters daily. This international reach aligns with Music Radio Creative’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity, providing services in 15 languages with an increasing demand for voices of color.

The Future for Voice Artists and Producers

For those keen to break into the industry, Izabela suggests diversification might be key. Beyond voice talent, skills in audio and video editing can offer a competitive edge. She also underscores the ongoing need for creative producers who are skilled in both audio and video.

    Final Thoughts

Izabela’s candid insights paint a realistic yet hopeful picture of the voice acting industry. As she reflects on Music Radio Creative’s name and evolving operations, she notes, “Our name is still relevant,” charting a path that honors its roots while embracing future opportunities. Whether you are a voice artist or a producer, Izabela’s advice is clear: adaptability, uniqueness, and continuous growth are paramount for thriving in this dynamic field.

HUGH P KLITZKE – The Craft of Conversational Reads

Mastering the Art of Conversational Voice Acting with Hugh Klitzke

Welcome to the latest edition of our blog featuring highlights from “Voice Acting Unplugged,” a podcast dedicated to exploring the intricacies of voice acting. In this episode, hosts Margaret Ashley and Anthony Rudd dive deep into the world of conversational voiceover with industry legend Hugh Klitzke. Hugh shares his vast experience and unique insights into what it truly means to connect with an audience through voice.
    Introduction to Conversational Voice Acting

Hugh Klitzke, a name synonymous with voiceover coaching and directing, joins our hosts to discuss his journey and approach to the art of voice acting. With a career spanning nearly 15 years as a voiceover studio manager in New York and over 18 years of coaching experience, Hugh has directed an astounding 125,000 sessions. His niche? Conversational voiceover.

The Evolution of the Conversational Read

The conversation takes us back to the roots of conversational voiceover, as Hugh explains:
“It really goes back to 1984, to a particular political campaign for President Ronald Reagan. The ‘Morning in America’ ad, voiced by Hal Reiney, marked a significant shift with its subdued and emotional delivery. This became known as ‘The Reiney Read’ and set a precedent in the industry.”
Hugh further elaborates on how this style evolved, highlighting campaigns like MasterCard’s ‘Priceless’ that emphasized character without being overly theatrical, reflecting the growing demand for authenticity in advertising.

    Understanding Interpretation Versus Presentation

A central theme is the distinction between a conversational read and an announcer read. Hugh emphasizes that the former is about interpretation, a skill rooted in emotional understanding rather than simple presentation. “Actors traditionally are not taught to present with a tone,” Hugh notes, drawing a parallel to Ian McKellen’s approach to Shakespeare – understanding the sense behind words to let their natural expression flow.

    Catering to a Modern Audience

The discussion also touches on adapting conversational reads to today’s dynamic audience. Hugh notes, “It’s not about talking to a friend. It’s about talking to Kim,” stressing the importance of specificity and authenticity. This nuanced approach helps voice actors connect deeply with their audience, aligning content with the right emotional tone.
When asked about the newer trends in voiceover, especially with younger audiences, Hugh sheds light on the cultural shift:
“You don’t want someone in their early twenties advising you on your 401k, but they can deliver other messages that resonate authentically with their peers.”

    Navigating Challenges in Voice Acting

The realm of conversational voiceovers isn’t static. While some aspects remain constant, Hugh acknowledges that trends and audience expectations evolve. He reassures that the core of voice acting will always hinge on genuine interaction and adaptability to changing linguistic norms and listener preferences.

    Opportunities for Coaching and Growth

To those aspiring to refine their craft, Hugh offers numerous resources through his platform, conversationalvo.com. Whether it’s a free consultation to gauge your potential or joining a Conversational Open Studio session to witness live coaching, Hugh provides invaluable pathways for growth.

For voice actors, both seasoned and new, understanding and mastering the conversational read can open doors to endless possibilities in this ever-evolving industry.

Marc Scott – The Hustle of Voice Acting

Navigating Voiceover Success with Mark Scott

Welcome to this week’s blog post, where we delve into the captivating world of voice acting through the lens of the insightful conversation hosted by Anthony and Margaret on “Voice Acting Unplugged.” Their guest, Marc Scott, a full-time voice actor from Canada, shares his rich journey and unique insights into the voiceover industry.

Meet Marc Scott – Voice Actor and VOpreneur
Marc Scott, our featured guest, defines his brand not just as a voice actor, but as a VOpreneur – a seamless merge of a voice actor and entrepreneur. This integrated approach has guided him through his career’s evolution, beginning from his foundational experiences in radio to his present-day endeavors in voice acting.

From Radio to Voiceover: Marc’s Journey
Marc explains that his path to voiceover began during his radio days. After facing downsizing in radio, Marc transitioned to voice acting, initially supplementing his income with online casting jobs. By 2012, Marc had decided to go full-time, driven by a commitment not to return to living with his parents, despite how supportive they were. He shares, “It was the perfect opportunity to do it.”

    Navigating the Voiceover Industry
Marc’s early client base primarily came from online casting sites. He notes, “In the early days, most of my stuff was probably coming from online casting sites,” highlighting that it was easier to make a living through these platforms back then. However, recognizing the need to expand, Marc focused on diversifying his client base through strategic marketing initiatives.

    Mastering Marketing
A cornerstone of Marc’s success is his embrace of marketing. From writing a blog because industry expert Gary Vaynerchuk recommended it, to deriving market insights and creating content that resonates with his audience, Marc illustrates how essential marketing is for a sustainable voiceover career. “I recognize that marketing does not come naturally to voice actors. We are creatives by nature,” he shares. His coaching services have become a vital resource for voice actors navigating this aspect of their careers.

    Harnessing Technology and AI
The conversation touches on Marc’s use of AI tools like ChatGPT, which he affectionately calls Jarvis, to enhance his productivity across various aspects of his business, from financial planning to content creation. While he acknowledges the benefits these tools bring, he is also candid about the challenges AI presents to voiceover artists, sharing personal experiences of losing clients to AI-narrated projects.

    Future-Proofing Through Diversification
Marc emphasizes the importance of having a well-rounded online presence. “In 2025, if you do not have a web presence, are you even really real?” he questions. Beyond a professional website, he encourages leveraging platforms like LinkedIn for organic client outreach, advocating for adaptability to emerging technologies and trends in the industry.

Offering Support Through Free Advice Fridays
One unique service Marc offers is his “Free Advice Fridays,” where he provides his expertise to help voice actors with industry-related queries. This initiative began as market research but has since evolved into a valued resource for both Marc and the voice acting community, allowing him to stay sharp and informed about the industry’s evolving challenges.

Marc Scott’s story is one of adaptation, innovation, and dedication within the voiceover realm. His journey from radio to full-fledged voice acting illustrates the blend of creativity and strategy required to thrive in a competitive industry. For those interested in exploring more about Marc’s insights and services, his platform VOpreneur.com serves as a comprehensive resource.

Whether you’re a budding voice actor or an industry veteran, Marc’s journey offers invaluable lessons on maneuvering through the evolving landscapes of voiceover work. HUGH EDWARDS – Acting, AI and Everything In Between

Voice Acting Unplugged: Exploring the Frontiers of Voice Acting with Hugh Edwards

Welcome to the Voice Acting Unplugged blog, where we delve deep into the art and business of voice acting. In this episode, Margaret Ashley and Anthony Rudd sit down with production powerhouse Hugh Edwards to discuss the dynamics of the voice acting industry and the evolving landscape for both new and seasoned voice artists.

Hugh is a producer, director, conference host, and co-founder of one of the largest training platforms for voiceover artists. “Hugh Edwards has been in this business and is a well-known name for a very, very long time,” says Anthony. We’re thrilled to have this industry expert with us, sharing insights from his extensive journey across the globe, from Zanzibar to Shanghai.

    Shifting Industry Trends

Hugh highlights the magnitude of change within the voice acting industry. His company, Gravy for the Brain, has trained over 72,000 voice actors globally. Edwards emphasizes the growing scale of voice acting communities worldwide, contrasting the industry’s once local mindset with today’s worldwide reach. “It’s way, way, way bigger than most people think,” he affirms.

Navigating Voice Acting in a Global Market

The conversation steers towards the challenges of directing voice projects internationally. According to Hugh, finding talented voice artists and quality studios worldwide can be difficult, but the effort is well worth it. He stresses the value of local expertise: “We always employ a native voice director…it becomes a really symbiotic process.”

    The Role of Artificial Intelligence

AI’s role in voice acting is another critical discussion point. Hugh shares insights on the integration of AI in projects, reassuring that while AI is advancing, it still lacks the human touch. “The thing that separates us from AI is our humanity,” Hugh observes. While AI presents opportunities, artists must focus on honing their unique human skills to distinguish themselves.

    The Importance of Broadening Skills

Margaret points out the shift towards conversational script reading and various vocal styles, urging artists to remain adaptable. “The rules are pretty similar to the way they always have been,” Hugh adds. “You’ve just got to be brilliant.” For those entering the field, understanding marketing, branding, and running a home studio are as crucial as the voice skills themselves.

    Building a Sustainable Career

Hugh emphasizes the growing pool of talent following the COVID-19 pandemic, noting the increase in skilled voice actors entering the industry. The key to thriving in this competitive market? Continuous training and adaptability. “Auditioning is the job,” Hugh quotes Brian Cranston, highlighting the significance of consistently refining one’s skills.

A Bright Future for Voice Acting

As the podcast concludes, Margaret sums up the conversation: “The future is bright, the future is rosy.” Continuous training, the right equipment, and hard work are essential ingredients for a successful voice acting career. With an abundance of opportunities, it’s a promising yet challenging time for voice artists willing to put in the effort.

JUSTIN SANDERS – Unlock the Secrets of Radio Advertising

Welcome to this episode of Voice Acting Unplugged. In our pursuit to unravel the dynamic world of voiceover, Anthony Rudd and Margaret Ashley introduce us to an esteemed guest, Justin Sanders. Justin, the Group Head of Production at Global, shares his 25-year journey through the intricate world of radio production. Join us as we delve into the evolving landscape of voiceover and radio advertising.

From Local Radio to Global Influence

Justin began his career in radio 25 years ago and has since climbed the ranks from local radio to becoming a key figure at Global, one of the world’s leading media groups. Reflecting on his journey, Justin shares, “I started out cutting my teeth locally in local radio, and then moved up to the big smoke… I’ve worked my way through as a producer, engineer, to head of production, and now group.”

Challenges and Triumphs in the Industry

Navigating the production landscape isn’t always smooth sailing. Justin recounts an amusing yet challenging customs experience involving recording equipment: “I’ve had some interesting looks in customs, especially when carrying equipment… we recorded with hydrophones underwater and had condoms as backups for the mics.”

The Evolving Face of Radio Advertising

Discussing the trends in radio advertising, Justin notes, “The industry goes through patterns. And I think native is key… there’s so much choice with voices now.” With an explosion of talent and agents, casting directors are now spoilt for choice, albeit sometimes overwhelmed by it.

    Quick Turnarounds and Innovative Solutions

In a world that demands immediacy, Justin recounts some intense turnaround times, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. He shares, “Within an hour, we were turning stuff around… literally on standby with a voice ready every time there was a British medal at the Olympics.”

    Audio’s Growing Appeal

Justin observes a rising hunger for audio content. He explains, “Appetite for audio is forever growing. The listening figures reflect that. A lot of people dismissed radio a long time ago, and it’s forever getting bigger audiences, bigger numbers.”

    Dynamic Advert Creation

The conversation shifts to dynamic advertising. Justin describes a campaign for British Airways where locations, times of day, and current events could alter ads on the fly, providing a personalized experience for listeners: “We can serve stuff that’s based off the location of where someone is or the time of day.”

    The Real Impact of AI

As AI begins to intersect with voiceover, Justin provides his insights: “AI can do basic messaging which is passible. But when you want emotional connection… it can’t deliver the emotion a real person can.” The consensus is that while AI has its applications, the human touch remains irreplaceable.

    In-Person Versus Remote Working

There’s value in personal encounters, as Justin highlights, “My preference is face to face, often you can see by the voiceover artist’s eyes whether it’s gone in.” The pandemic has altered dynamics, but both remote and in-studio work have their merits.

For everyone tuning in, we hope you found this peek into the world of radio advertising as engaging as we did. Feel free to share your thoughts, leave a review, and let us know who you’d like us to interview next. Thank you for joining us on this episode of Voice Acting Unplugged.

    All the best,
    Margaret & Anthony
